Deuce – Mess Ages

Releasedate: 09-05-2009
By: Nina Mende

“The whole story started in the early days of 2004. Three crazy guys, playing guitar (Kai), Bass (Lukas) and Drums (Andy) met at their schools Symphony-Orchestra. Kai and Lukas used to play in some kind of “two-man-band” and Lukas knew Andy because of their spontaneous jam-sessions during the Orchestra practice. So they decided to found a band. But they still needed a singer and somebody to play rhythm guitar. So Kai handed a guitar to his old schoolmate James (Gunnion, who wrote “I want You”) and introduced him to the rest of the band. It was more difficult to find a singer. Eventually Daniel got caught, after the band heard him sing on a Christmas-concert at school. In the summer of 2005 James left the band to find his luck in England (he still hasn’t found it) and a new guitar player was needed.
In April of 2006 Lenny replaced James, so now he takes care of the rhythm and the beer.”

That is how a teeny band describes themselves, a band that I saw firs (and only) at an Emergenza festival last year. Since then a lot has happened and the guys have recorded their debut record called “Mess-Ages”. There is no label to distribute it. The release gig for that album was on May 9th, but we didn’t stay for the whole thing due to too much delay.

I was quite amazed as I pressed play on the first song: It was their first CD and the first riff already sounded like off a Rolling Stones album. It didn’t stay that high quality, but you could hear potential as listening to it. The second song for example sounded very blurry, and all in all after listening to it all you could tell that it was their first record. The vocal and music skills were still quite unrehearsed but as I said, you could also hear potential. As a first record I found it better than some other stuff I had heard before, and I am convinced that if the guys keep on going they will get better very fast. So let’s look forward to their second release.
