Malice in Wonderland – 05-10-2012

Interview with: Chris
By: Sabine van Gameren

Malice In Wonderland was one of those bands that made themselves very present on MySpace back in the time. Though, the last couple of years it have been quiet around this band until they somehow popped up at the line up for Trashfest. There we got a chance to speak with Chris to see what has been going on and what we can expect from them.

Chris starts telling that he has not been in Finland since 2010. Some band members left the band which are now replaced. “Everything from management, promotion, record deals were expiring and we also thought we needed a fresh start” Chris comments. Wondering what influence the new members bring into the music it seemed to take a while for Chris to tell us. He seems well prepared for the most logical questions but we like to go a bit of the route to see what this band will come with. Their new drummer is said to have the same style as the people were used to already as they were not looking into having much change into that, but the new bassist seem to bring more difference, besides his style he also brings in backing vocals. “It’s good to have some fresh blood into the group and seeing that everyone is really enthusiastic about everything that is going on” Chris tells. Summarizing, the band is back on track and ready to get things started again: “It may have been quiet, but we have been working hard behind the scenes. We now have an album, it has just been mixed. We are now getting started again”.

The Royal Brigade
That brings us to the conversation on their new album called: “The Royal Brigade”. According to Chris it is mixed and very ready as he lets us know several times during the interview, but when exactly it will be out is still not known. In April 2012 a teaser of the album appeared on the internet and as it is now October we still have not heard exactly when the fans can get their hands on it. Chris tells at first that it is not known because the teaser was made with the demo’s, but a bit later a more important factor comes out. There is no label yet. However, Chris seems confident in finding one, and tells us we may expect the album in Spring 2013 as the band plans also to tour around that time.
Then, the album is going to be a bit different from what the band has brought before. Chris tells it will be an album that is more guitar driven than their previous releases. That has to do with the way he writes his music. “Before I wrote more on piano and keyboard, but I don’t do that anymore” he tells. Then we go a bit deeper into the songs and even though Chris does not really want to tell too much on it yet, it comes clear that the album will be varied. Chris said: “It is a really varied album with a lot of different moods. Much mature album”.

Those last words makes us wonder about the audience the band attracts as it seemed like they had quite a bunch of young fans around back in the time and we wondered if they will be along with the band still. According to Chris he thinks that some of those are still around, but he is aware that maybe not everyone kept following them. “They might started to like us when they were around 15 years old and now have grown up, early 20’s, changed life and interest , maybe have husband and babies so don’t have time to have music as a hobby anymore”, Chris tells. Even though here at Trashfest many people seem very interested in them it is clear that some years of absence in the active band scene may have its results. “We have not been the easiest band to follow, because we the tendency to disappear, so people may forget. There are loads of bands out here. But I hope when they do hear about us again they are getting back along and check out the new material” Chris concludes.
