Boots Electric – Honkey Kong

Releasedate: 19-09-2011; Label: Dangerbird
By: Milla Smile

“Boots Electric” is the solo project of Jesse ‘The Devil’ Hughes, the frontman of “Eagles of Death Metal”. His debut album “Honkey Kong” was realized at September 2011.

For describing the sound of this album we just mention only two points. There are honky tonk and Donkey Kong. What supposed to be the combination of the piano that’s wild playing at the corners of bars in the first decade of XX-th century and the large ape from Nintendo video game created in early 80’s? The album perfectly answers this question. From the opening track “Complexity” (that sounds nothing else but 16-beat soundtrack of 80’s Nintendo video game) to the last track “Swallowed by the Night” (this one is a country tune accompanied by acoustic guitar with barking dogs or howling wolves in the end). Truth is, Hughes used too many voice effects so there is no problem to imagine every tune singing a cappella.

The thing is, Boots Electric mixed a little bit of this and that. However it’s hard to call “music” what he made at all. Perhaps, that’s the performance of the one and only performer. Anyway, everyone who has a lot sense of humor amount could consider “Honkey Kong” as “catchy and funny”.
