14-10-2008 Matthau Mikojan

Supports: The Jade, Eden; Venue: Nachtleben, Frankfurt (Germany)
By: Nina Mende

After Bloodpit had split up, Matthau officially started his solo project with which he was on tour now. Supported by the Finnish band The Jade and the local band EDEN for Frankfurt they were rocking the house tonight. Unfortunately it was a Tuesday morning and quite empty. The front rows were filled though.

First band of the night, EDEN, I had seen before together with PSG and So Called Plan in April. Shortly after that show some of the band members had left the band but now they are complete again with other band members and were even better than last time. But let me first tell you some things about the band: The band is from Darmstadt, so quite local to Frankfurt. 5 guys rocking the stage, the singer reminding a little bit of Ville Valo but also of Anzi Destruction at some times. The style of music is goth-rock. The keyboard adds the final touch to the music. On stage they had great light for an opening act; the sound was good as well. The guys talked and played a lot with their audience and everybody seemed to like EDEN. They cheered and danced along, wanting more. EDEN had fun on stage, you could tell. Tonight they did not play any HIM covers. Unfortunately they did not play for very long, but it was a great show and I am looking forward to see them again.

Next on stage was The Jade. Somehow many people had gone upstairs to smoke and the club was very empty now. The Jade, a band from Helsinki/Finland, had almost no light on stage and the show was as usual. There were no new songs they played compared to last time I saw them which was in April. The audience was not into it too much either. There was just something missing, something like a link between audience and band because the band gave everything on stage but the enthusiasm just didn’t spread over the whole club.

Now everybody gathered back because it was time for Matthau Mikojan to start with his show. Along on tour he had Simo on drums who also plays in Bitterlicks and Teemu on bass. The Tampere trio got the audience going, cheering and shouting out loud, singing along and dance through the club. The songs were performed very passionate and Matthau talked a lot with the audience which gave the whole evening more of a living room atmosphere. We all laughed a lot during the show and everybody enjoyed it a lot so that they wouldn’t let the band get off stage. They played songs off the latest album and off the upcoming EP which will be released next month. They also played some covers as encore. Matthau’s style had not changed much since the Bloodpit times, crazy but great as usual he stood on stage. We really enjoyed the show and hoped to see them again soon. But first we are looking forward to the new EP.
