Sons of Seasons – Magnisphyricon

Releasedate: 01-04-2011; Label: Napalm Records
By: Lara Cappelli

Sons of Season is a symphonic metal band from Germany, founded in 2007 by Kamelot keyboardist Oliver Palotai. They released their first album in 2009 and now they’re back with “Magnisphyricon”.

What Oliver Palotai, main composer of the band, had in mind when forming Sons of Season was to centre the music of the band on his instrument. This is what was clearly hearable in their debut “Gods of Vermin”. This time, “Magnisphyricon” wants to grant a wider space to the other instruments as well, turning out as a rather ambitious release. Indeed, in order to bring out all of the instruments, the album is composed of several different expedients that make it extremely diversified and heterogeneous. Though, the trap it falls into is the one of confusion. Very reductively talking, the album could be put into symphonic metal. Still, quite some gothic and progressive influences crop up, so much so that the listener might not get to figure out what and who the band wants to reach. The road undertaken by Sons of Season does make the great talent of the members stand out, although it doesn’t get to have the ultimate aim of it defined. With “Magnisphyricon” the band proves once again its capabilities in composing and performing quite some noteworthy songs, which however seem too imprecise and nuanced when put together in an album.
