09-10-2008 Demented Are Go

Supports: Bad Baboons; Venue: Nachtleben, Frankfurt (Germany)
By: Nina Mende

I haven’t been to a psychobilly gig in ages so it was time for one. Luckily Demented are Go played in Frankfurt tonight. It was quite crowded with many psycho- and rockabilly fans as well as some punks and also some medieval dressed people.

The opening act of the night was Bad Baboons, a German band sounded somewhat local to the Hessian area when they were talking. The band exists for about a year now and they play rock in all varieties. The singer was dressed up like a pirate and the bass player wore a mask of a baboon. They drank something on stage which was called “Grog” (Rum mixed with hot water). They were totally into their pirate roles and did not get irritated by anything. The singer announced he would share his bottle of Grog if the audience would come closer. They did. Many people were dancing along to the Bad Baboons who even played an encore.

The next band was Demented are Go from the UK. Ever since the genre of psychobilly reared its ugly head Demented are Go, Cardiff born, have been feared and revered as one of Europe’s top underground acts. Demented are Go, the twisted brainchild of Welsh cousins Spark Retard and Ant the mule Thomas, have so far achieved top ten indie chart success and built up a cult following with a post modern mixture of styles that encapsulates everything bad about Rock’n’Roll. The audience was going wild with them on stage. There was a lot of moshing going on to the bloody great music. The guys of the band all had Halloween make-up in their face looking like they are Zombies with blood running down and having wounds on their heads. Two of them (singer and stand up bassist) had flattops. I am not sure if the singer simply wasn’t feeling that well tonight or if it had other reasons, but the band left the stage a couple times although they had been only half through the show according to the set list. That made the audience get mad and they grabbed the microphones off the stage shouting bad stuff into it and trying hard to get the band back on stage. They came back every time and played more songs until all songs of the list were played. Now the crowd was satisfied But in between I was fearing they would take the club apart. Luckily they didn’t. The back of the stand up bass had a nice painting on it. Demented are Go gave everything on stage and rocked for over an hour. Great and fast music, no wonder that band has been around for over 25 years. Cheers to that and another 25 years.
