Reflection – When Shadows Fall

Releasedate: 2008; Label: Cruz Del Sur Music
By: Elvira Visser

“When Shadows Fall” is the third album of the Greek band Reflection. The band exists for almost 17 years. Reflection plays epic metal with doom influences. In 2006 the band had some line up changes and attracted Leo Stivala (Forsaken) for the vocals. The band has been performing on stage with Demon, Paul Di Anno, Solitude Aeturnus and Wotan.

When listening to this new album of the Greek band, you will find out it is not very original. It is a bit on the safe side. Riffs and melodies we have heard before. At some points the slow doom atmosphere gets a bit boring, luckily there are some good guitar riffs. The track that stands out the most to me is the second version of “Mistress of Sea” which is an orchestral version. However said that the album is not very original, they start this album with a Greek/Spanish acoustic guitar intro, but it does not return in any form in the track.

They attracted Leo Stivala to the band as a vocalist but I am not fully convinced of his skills. As an example: “Entering the Sea” and “Kingdom of Fire” or maybe it is not of my liking. The orchestral version of “Mistress of Sea” is one of the tracks where I like his voice more in combination with the female vocalist. There are tracks that have parts that stand out, but slowly fade during the tracks. Some tracks like “Kingdom of Fire” have a catchy sound to it, which make the lyrics stick to your mind.

To me this album has promising parts but also parts where I would have expected more. If you like this scene of music you will probably like this, but do not expect anything amazing from these guys. They did not make a lasting impression, on me, with this record.
