10-03-2011 Combichrist

Supports: Mortiis; Venue:Batschkapp, Frankfurt (Germany)

Another night out lead us to Batschkapp in Frankfurt to see Mortiis and Combichrist at their last club show of this tour.

There were many people waiting outside already for the sold out show. All very excited to see Combichrist — and Mortiis of course.

The first band was a local industrial duo. Girl and boy pushing buttons to create the music they played, dancing to it and trying to get the audience to go along. There was a whole lot of fog and the light was dim. Somehow the 30 minutes still seemed long. The music was quite monotone. The duo just couldn’t convince the audience and get them to go along.

Mortiis did a much better job at that. Mortiis is a band from Notodden, Norway fronted by Håvard Ellefsen, who is also known as the namesake of the band. The name is a misspelling of the word ‘mortis’, which is the pronunciation used by the band. However, Mortiis started as the solo project of Ellefsen as a means to convey a story. This aspect was lost over time and Mortiis slowly formed into a band. There was still a lot of fog on stage, and the flashy light was not too bright either, but Mortiis rocked it big time. The audience moved along, clapped and cheered a whole lot. The band moved around on stage a whole lot. Energizing music combined with a powerful performance. A wonderful support for a band like Combichrist.

As Combichrist entered the stage, the cheering was loud. The band wore face paint and the audience loved it. Some fans even wore face paint themselves. Combichrist was going of with a blast. With full force from second one they did not slow down until the bitter end. The singer Andy kept running up and down the stage, the two drummers Joe and Trevor were beating the shit out of their drums and keyboarder Z Marr rocked behind the keys. Nobody was standing still. People were moshing and going insane in the audience. Combichrist played old and new songs, the audience knew them all. For the last few songs Tim from Mortiis joined Trevor on the drums before they began throwing around the drums again. It was an awesomely strong performance that let everyone crave for more.
