Releasedate: 2023 Label: Gods Ov War Productions
Wilczyca is a Polish Black metal formation. They formed in 2019 and are steady releasers, in 2023 they came already with album number four to the market. “Magija” is out now.
The dark and grim album art was surely drawing my attention and with the reputation of the label in mind I knew I was up for a heavy release. And this is exactly what you get when “Magija” is on your player. At the start it is not blowing you away with high tempo, a doomy sound enters the room and when the vocals come in you get a smack with the hammer. An icy cold breeze. I can’t tell you what they are telling you, for I do not speak Polish, but the atmosphere they set brings the chills running down my spine. Just the way I like it.
When they take up the tempo a bit the darkness hovers over you just a bit more. The strength of this formation is that with all they have in their music, they still give it a minimalistic feel. Nothing is extra. Some well thought compositions that combine the elements they need to come this atmosphere and no superlatives are needed for that.
Fun thing to discover is that track called “Tiferet”, a haunting feel that creates a piece of tranquility within the release, but the bulldozer that drives over you straight after it carries the name “Wij Się Bōlu Córo Syjonu” and it knows no merci.
A lot can be done by contrasts and Wilczyca shown themselves masters in that. A great release that you should definitely pick up. Oh and… bonuspoints for the artwork. You can’t say that enough.
