Interview with: Patrick Walker
By: Sabine van Gameren
40 Watt Sun is playing at Baroeg and Tempelores took time chat up with the band.
Patrick Walker, the bands vocalist/guitarist, is doing this interview with Tempelores. Unavoidable, the story starts with stating that many people on the internet talk about this band as if this band is just Warning (Patrick’s previous band) with a name change. Of course the old fame can work in advance of the band, but we were seeking for Patrick’s view on it. When we confront him with it, it seems to be a bit more in the direction we predicted. “I did not want to do the same as in Warning anymore” the front man starts telling. In fact, he seem to take 40 Watt Sun as the project that grew with him as the years drop by. Whether he feels like taking any action in taking a step away from these ideas that old Warning fans have over this band is not that sure, but that this is a relevant thing got confirmed during the show later on where fans asked the band to play “Footprints”, which is a Warning song, continuously. Patrick tells he is more focused on getting a new group of fans and is happy with the Warning fans that still follow his musical career. |
Soon the conversation comes to the album “The Inside Room”. It is released just before the tour started, 2 days before this interview. It was announced a long time ago and the release date have been a mystery for a long time. Suddenly it was there and we are curious what was behind all the hassle of it. According to Patrick this all has to do with the mixing and mastering which seemed to came with some discussion. The recordings were actually done in three days and two nights, which was quite an experience as Patrick tells they have not really got much sleep in between. The band recorded it just by themselves, no engineer and this made the product a beloved child that they all care so much for. |
The album just came out a bit before this day and Patrick have not heard much responses on it, but the ones he heard were all very positive which made the hopes for a good tour quite thinkable. When we move on to the touring aspect, we come to the conclusion that before this album came they only had two live dates done and so basically this is all quite new.
What his intentions are with the band on the road seem quite clear. Patrick does not want to do a gypsy tour while sleeping on peoples floor etc. “I don’t mind touring as much as before” he says on it. As long as a bed, a shower and food is included. We came to the conclusion that touring in the UK is not as good as touring Europe. “It’s quite nice playing and travelling over here” he says. So what is in the future is uncertain, but the will to play more live gigs is there. As we wondered about the differences between seeing the band live and listening to them on recorded media Patrick have to think a while before finding the right words to describe it. “I like to keep things fresh” her tells and it seems like he also rewrite lyrics sometimes. We mutually agree that this is a mighty trick to confuse the fans a little, when they plan to sing along. |
What else is in the future for them seems quite open. Patrick says that there are some acoustic songs that he want to record. And that is basically where we end the interview with. We’ll have to await what comes next from this band, but for now you can still enjoy “The Inside Room”. |
