04-02-2011 Laura Veirs

Supports: Led To Sea; Venue: Circolo degli Artisti, Rome (Italy)
By: Lara Cappelli

Laura Veirs is an American singer/songwriter. Although her latest album “July Flames” has been released in January 2010, the European tour to promote it has just started and will see her and her band touring until February.

Led To Sea was the opening for tonight’s show, a solo project of violinist/violist Alex Guy from Seattle. Although Alex was the only one to play and sing, somehow it seemed like having quite a crowded stage in front of you. Thanks to various effects, she managed to register what she had played before, in order to add new themes to the previously registered melodies and give her music a clearer shape. Alex also made her best to reach a kind of connection with the audience that, maybe because of the lack of people in the venue at that time, didn’t really react with an hearty welcome. As the show went by though, Alex succeeded in convincing more and more people thanks to her skills and music, which was supported by Laura Veirs’s guitarist Tim Young for a song. This short show has surely sowed some sporadic interest towards her music, especially for the all-round side of it.

This was the first time that Laura Veirs experienced a European tour as a trio, composed by guitarist Tim Young and violinist/violist Alex Guy and, despite being quite a challenge, it surely turned out well. Already before the show the atmosphere in the venue was pretty relaxed; you could see Laura and her band roaming around and chatting with anyone who wanted to. The atmosphere that was brought on stage was basically the same. As Alex did before her, Laura tried to establish a connection with the audience, but her attempt was definitely more successful than Alex’s. During the show, a kind of worldwide competition was proposed on what audience could sing louder and despite not being the loudest, tonight’s one has been judged the one that had more fun. A lot of space has been left for fun as well as intense moments. As expected, on a live situation Laura’s music is narrative and evocative just like on record, which builds up quite an intense and pleasant atmosphere. All these different sides of the show never really appeared any forced but actually showed the extreme naturalness Laura Veirs has in conveying her music.
