Steegmoord is a Belgian project by Maarten Doumen. People who heard his previous material got to know him as Prog Metal act but with his latest release “Trepidation” he made some changes and looked more into influences of Stoner. “Trepidation” will be released on February 25th.
About half an hour full of Melodic riffs, not stepping away from Prog but certainly experimenting with different intake, is presented with this album. Everything is done by Maarten himself and that makes that the whole has a logic following. Album opener “A Fine Day To Exit” has a lovely melodic sound to it, but on the second track it becomes a bit more powerful. If you did not know it is an instrumental release you may at some points think vocals would come in there, while they don’t. You soon get over that as there is enough happening for you to be listening to.
Halfway you come across “Crucified Demons” which was released as a single. It has a recognizable sound. Most remarkable is the track “Standing Alone” which seem to summarize all the different sides we have heard on this release. A heavy track that also has a melodic side to match it with.
Altogether “Trepidation” is a fine release by Steegmoord that has catchy music, yet with a vehement edge. It is easy to listen to and varied enough to keep the listener along through the eight songs the album carries.
