Old Spirit is an ‘old school weirdo metal project’ created by Jason Hartman, who is also known from bands such as Vanishing Kids and Jex Thoth. The self-titled debut album is out now via Bright as Night Records.

“Old Spirit” delivers us six tracks with the perfect balance of different musical styles. Psychedelia and the doom are in the highlight with classic heavy metal/occult spirit accompanying the sound. The listeners will also feel this in the vocals, mostly clean and raw with some rough-ness here and there. In general, this is not a ‘heavy’ and ‘slow’ album in itself but a rather colorful one with dark and surprising twists. The melodies and riffs will stay in your mind in each song and will take you to different rides!

One thing I loved about this album was the depth and the nostalgia it brings. “Old Spirit” is not a monotonous album and it will attract the ones who like their music without boundaries! I personally loved the contrast between the heavy-ness (Catastrophe, Snow Leopard) and the psychedelia (Feel The Stars, Seasons) as we see the different layers to Old Spirit‘s sound and what Jason Hartman can do! The album also feels natural and improvised in a way. There is this free, creative approach to it with well-thought arrangements and production.

“Old Spirit” is the perfect album for the ones who are in for that heavy sound mixed with psychedelia …also recommended for the retro/occult rock lovers and the fans of the 60s/70s sound! Dive in and enjoy the ride!
