Intro
EPHEMERALD is a Finnish band, formed in 2016 by Joni Snoro (ex-Frosttide), Lauri Myllylä (Voidfallen), Vesa Salovaara (Vorna) and Juho Suomi (Apocryfal). Later they joined forces with Tuomo Sagulin (Mechanik Project). The band creates epic yet furious and straightforward metal music from the hearts of its creators. “Between The Glimpses of Hope” is the debut full-length of Ephemerald and it is out now!
Review
“Epic” would be THE word to describe this record. From the beginning to the end, the band radiates this “epic” energy, luring us in and making us want to hear more. Melodic guitar riffs form the highlight of the record, accompanied by the vocals, both growls and clean, as well as the bombastic drumming! Each member has been active in the scene and this shows. There is a certain dedication and passion.
Musically speaking, the album is just how you would define epic metal. You have the melodic death metal as the foundation with the orchestrations in the background. The songs are generally fast-paced with the only exception of “All There Is”, which is ballad-like. If you are especially a fan of the Finnish metal scene, you will also realize the Finnish atmosphere throughout the release.
Despite the epicness of this record, which I enjoyed a lot, there is still room for improvement for sure. One problem with this genre is that some big names, in particular from the Finnish metal scene, comes to mind right away. So “Between The Glimpses of Hope” is not an innovative or a unique record in this aspect. Another aspect is the element of clean vocals; I think that the element of growls, rather than clean vocals, is the strength of this band so these aspects could be something that Ephemerald can work on along with the production process. The band definitely has potential and that drive though and this is definitely the type of music you will enjoy live and headbang to!
“Between The Glimpses of Hope” is definitely recommended to the fans of melodeath and epic metal… and especially to you fans of Finnish metal! It surely needs some fine-tuning but I am pretty sure the band will grow and improve in the future so let’s wait and see!
