Power Quest was formed back in 2001 when two musicians from “Dragon Heart”, now known as “Dragonforce”, had left their band to start with something new. In these seven years since the beginning they have released three albums under on different labels. Now they signed with Napalm Records and released their fourth CD “Master of Illusion”.
What strikes me while listening to this CD for the first time is the vocal melodies. These are very catchy, ready to let the chorus stick to your mind. The cover is a real eye-catcher as well. This sort of demon figure holding the world in its his hand while on the left side you see angels in blue and on the right devils in red. No wonder Alessio Garavello is singing about heaven and cemetery gates on the first track. The first track already proving its catchiness, and shows that the band can play a good portion of power metal.
Their music is melodic power metal, hearing fast paced drums with double bass attacks and great guitar solos that create great sweeping melodies. To contribute more to these melodies they worked together with keyboardist Richard West (Threshold) and others people.
The track “Cemetary Gates” as well as “Kings of Eternity” have this incredible catchy chorus and have a great guitar solo. “Civilised?” gives you a progressive keyboard and guitar interchange before bursting into a chorus. On “The Vigil” you hear harmonic singing and some growls which makes this track my favourite of the album. “Hearts and Voices” starts off with a bit electronic 80’s sound to fade away when Garavello starts singing. “Never Again” is the last track which has this great, paced drums. “Master of Illusion” is a very good power metal album.
