Calarook – Surrender or Die

Label: Self-released
Releasedate: 11-09-2020

Calarook are releasing Surrender or Die, their first work after changing the name from Calico. It’s pretty funny that a band from Switzerland, known for being a mountain country without access to the sea, comes to release a pirate metal album. And yet, here we are.

Not that it matters, really. They are growling, singing about alcohol and performing in a good pirate fashion. I have a thing or two for pirates and I’m always looking at where the next pirate metal album is. What is “Pirate metal”, in the first place? This is my personal interpretation but it is a sub-genre of folk metal with alcohol references. Don’t take me wrong! I love it to the bits.

“Kraken’s Chest” is the point where they blast through and is extremely interesting to listen to growling pirate metal, with “yo hoho” and “ahoy” being screamed with around. “Loyal to None but Rum” is an ode to alcohol, just as pirate metal often is. The album ends epically with “The Undying Sailor”, waving at the listeners while sailing the high seas.

To sum up, this album is fun to hear and most likely these guys are great at concerts, especially open-air ones on a nice summer day. If you celebrate talk like a pirate day on the 19th of September, this is a great guide. Surrender or Die is cool.
