Intro

Finnish black metal act Väki define themselves as “a musical act embodying the profound manifestations of death, impurity and chaos, dedicated to capture the darkest aspects of reality.” Three years after the release of the debut EP Kirousi, they are back with the debut full-length, Kuolleen Maan Omaksi, which is roughly translated to Succumbed to the Dead Soil.

Review

Quite straightforward, modern yet raw…Kuolleeen Maan Omaksi contains seven songs delivering the total darkness and aggression… just how I like my black metal! Overall, the music speaks for itself very well and there is also a technical aspect to the album. One one hand, we have the vocals, full of dedication and the passion, and on the other hand, the guitar solos and the drums give it a certain technical and even ‘progressive’ aspect. A great example of this is song #5 where we even have a bit of doom elements in there and spontaneous guitar riffs. Perfect! These surprises make a release like this definitely interesting. There is not atmosphere but the overall rhythm of the album is rather uptempo and will activate the fire within.

At this point, you probably recognized that all of the song names are in Finnish. So if you dive deep into the album, make sure to also check out the lyrics via our good old friend Google Translate or maybe ask your Finnish metalhead friend for some help! Either way, don’t let this fact confuse you as, mentioned above, the music speaks for itself and that chaos will lure you in.

Kuolleen Maan Omaksi is the perfect black metal release for the ones wanting to release that aggression. It is especially recommended if you like your BM fast, raw and without atmosphere. We all need that fire every now and then…. So what are you waiting for?
