Interview: Chris, Klaas and Bo
By: Nina Mende
Between all the shows we had a quick interview with Lord Of The Lost. Chris, Klaas and Bo took some time to answer questions.
WGT was not the only festival Lord Of The Lost Would be playing at this summer, they will also play at Wacken, a festival in Bosnia and some smaller festivals in the fall. They would have hoped to also be playing at M’era Luna or Amphi Festival, but in the beginning it is always hard to get to such festivals. The guys hope to maybe play there next year. Further they will play at Trash Fest in Helsinki next year.
Lord Of The Lost just finished a two week tour to promote their album live. The second leg of the tour will follow in late fall. They will also be touring the UK with Acey Slade’s band Acey Slade and The Dark Party, then they will do a tour with Lacrimas Profundere in Germany (three dates are confirmed for that so far) and then they will also do the Germany tour with Acey’s band. Basically the deal is: Acey takes them to the UK and Lord brings them to Germany.
During the Lord Of The Lost show earlier they mentioned that they were already working on their second album. Of course did I want to know more about that since it seemed quite fast to me. The debut has just been released. Chris explained that basically the first album has been done for 1 ½ years already. The band did not want to release the album during the Christmas time because it would not be seen amongst all the “big releases” that you have in that period of the year. The second album is in production right now and is planned to be released some time next year. 20 songs are being recorded and then some 10 songs are being picked for the album. The exact release date depends on many things: The label has to like it, and so on. Chris would love to release it sometime after summer next year so that there is 1 ½ years in between the albums, and maybe an EP in between. They are currently checking if they are allowed t release the Lady Gaga Cover “Bad Romance” on an EP along with 3 or 4 songs of their own. But they don’t have the ok from Lady Gaga’s label now Lady Gaga herself yet, so this is only plans so far. The story behind Lord Of The Lost covering Lady Gaga was an evening in a bar with some beer, the song being played and the band thinking: That is it! We should cover that one. Said and done and here they are now playing it at every show. The fans seem to love it. Premier was at Trash Fest this year.
Today here at WGT it was not loved too much. Maybe because there were more gothic people and not the rock crowd Lord Of The Lost usually has as audience.
The feedback to the current album is mostly positive. Of course you always have some critics like it is to soft for the metal people, for the Goths it sounds too harsh and so on. But all in all people seem to love the album.
Lord Of The Lost is already writing songs for the third album.
I was curious how Lord Of The Lost came to existence. Chris told me that it kind of just happened. He was writing songs that would not fit into any of his other projects. Chris wanted to hit stages with these songs which doesn’t work to well all alone. So he asked some friends if they would want to join in on this idea and so one thing lead to another. The band is there to stay and not just a live band. The name was originally being thought of “Lord” only because it is such a strong word. But Lord is being used as a trademark and many bands have too similar names, so Lord did not work. So they entered a little emotion to the name for people who like to have emotions in a little stronger way. That’s how they came up with Lord Of The Lost.
Lord Of The Lost is Chris’ number one project. UnterArt is taking a break at the moment because each member is extremely busy. Since this is not a solo project they have to come together to write new stuff, but it is still alive, only sleeping.
The inspiration for music comes from the heart. None of the band members can live without music and being on stage means to them to get out all their deep emotions, no matter which. To Chris music is emotionally on the same level as sex. The rest of the band agreed. Basically music is to them a way of handling stress, anger, love and every other emotion life is confronting you with. Music is the only thing where you can share the deepest feelings and form a strong bond (next to sex – Chris added).
I was asking now where they want to go with Lord Of The Lost. Chris answered wherever they would let the band go to. Of course do they want to “take over the world” and reach as much as possible. It takes long , but the band is proud of each and every single baby step they take and the guys are happy if it only continues like that. They would give everything to keep on going. Basically prostitute themselves to themselves. Take every chance they get and work hard at all times.
Since the guys of Lord Of The Lost can’t live from music (yet) they all have to work in “regular” jobs next to their busy band life, which means they have to work twice as hard in the same (or sometimes even less) time as others to manage both parts of their lives. They all sacrifice a lot, not only sleeping time, but also private life and time off. Having a band costs a lot of input and dedication, money-wise as well as time-wise and you need to keep working extremely hard in the beginning to get out there and get known. It is amazing how they manage it that well. Hopefully it will pay off some day but as of now they are all simply happy to be able to play their music and receive such a great feedback. So basically all the work is already paying off – on an emotional level.
Lord Of The Lost would love to play everywhere but playing at venues at different places costs a lot of money (getting there, booking the venue, food, hotel, etc…) and it is always a risk. If not enough people show up the band lost money. They don’t focus on a certain area either though. But they kind of trust their label and depend on them to “send” them places where the label thinks a gig would be well visited and the music is liked. Of course fans always want their favorite bands to come everywhere but that is not always possible due to the high costs. So it depends on the sales figures there, local promoters, booking agent or maybe bands that take them along. But of course do even Lord Of The Lost have some favorite places where they would love to go: Scandinavia, England and California.
It was a very informative interview with the guys. Thank you so much for your time.
