Matthau Mikojan is the ex-singer of Bloodpit from Tampere/Finland who now has released his solo album „Matthau Mikojan“. He has always been special and different, doing his own style no matter what. And Matthau keeps on doing that. The album layout is very interesting, kept in green in the style of a one Dollar bill with various other symbols hidden. Really interesting to take a closer look at.
The album is quite powerful and has a big sound. The sound of the vocals sound like an 80s recording, which adds a special and somehow more serious touch to the whole sound. The lyrics are very thoughtful and personal, the songs very sensitive and emotional. It is a rock album, combined with jazz and swing. Matthau’s smoky and unique voice makes the songs stronger and even touchier. The music varies in between all the previously named styles and never gets boring or easy, the creativity which is put into the album makes the songs unpredictable and not that easy to sing along. But in my opinion this is the reason why the album is even more interesting and can be heard a thousand times more. The beginning of “Then She Cried” reminds me of the Police song “Message In A Bottle”.
I really like this album because it is creative, artistic and unpredictable in a unique way. People say Matthau is born to be a rockstar, I say he is born to be a genius!!! But of course he is also a rockstar and I am looking forward to see him live with his new band.
