09-06-2010 Jónsi

Supports: Glasser; Venue: Alcatraz, Milan (Italy)
By: Lara Cappelli

Sigur Rós’ singer Jónsi, recently released his first solo album and he’s currently touring Europe to promote it. Tonight he reached Milan.

Cameron Mesirow and her band Glasser had the job to heat the atmosphere. Accompanied by a hooded keyboarder/programmer, Cameron surprised everyone in the crowd with her experimental mixture of indie pop and folktronic. The show was kind of theatrical, constantly covered by the dark that hide the two musicians. The music itself sounded quite particular, but the real gem was Cameron’s voice, which was often subject to some kind of experiments that made it similar to animals cry. Unfortunately, the fact of being only two members without the possibility of varying the instruments, made the show quite flat. Apart from exceptional cases, I couldn’t really tell the difference among the songs played and, with such a premise, I can’t image how they could handle to entertain an audience with a set longer than half an hour. However, their music proposal is quite interesting and surely a one to keep an eye on.

Jónsi chose to get the concert started in an unusual way, playing in succession three extremely atmospheric and slow songs, where two of them were unreleased. The result was the initial silence the concert was enshround with that made it surreal. Afterwards, it all was an emotions crescendo, marked by a stunning set design: the band played the whole time with continuous images projected on a screen and on boxes placed to the sides of the stage. I personally found Jónsi’s attitude way more glib compared to the one he usually takes when playing with Sigur Rós: it happened that he moved from his position quite some times during the concert, drifting even to sporadic words in between the songs. What I enjoyed the most about this concert was the versatility the band demonstrated in varying different songs and atmospheres, that in the end made it all a well-rounded concert: you could smile, cry, laugh and dance with such an easiness that didn’t even make you realise it. There are so many stunning aspects that such a concert can knock you back with, that I definitely suggest not only Sigur Rós fans to catch Jónsi on this tour.
