Waste of Space Orchestra is the beautiful child born through a collaboration of the two bands Dark Buddha Rising and Oranssi Pazuzu. This project was originally planned as a concept piece for Roadburn Festival last year, and included ten musicians onstage plus an original video equipment designed to tell a parallel story with the music. The ten-part, one hour piece is a dive into the consciousnesses of three beings – all of whom are on a search for deeper truths in comprehending reality. After a fantastic performance last year, this project decided to release this story as an album….here comes “Syntheosis”.
“Syntheosis” is dark and an otherworldly ritual from the beginning to the end. Crafting a nice mix of many styles and influences including occult, doom and black metal, the release delivers styles you have probably heard of or experienced here and there in singular forms and shapes. However, the release as a whole is a dark bizarre journey. Progressive elements represent the overall sound with many twists and turns as the music changes with each song. A big highlight that is very well-balanced is also the harmony between the vocals and the instrumental passages. So overall, “Syntheosis” is an intense record so take your time to digest it as it needs a few spins and a clear head for sure!
As a whole, “Syntheosis” can be considered as a huge masterpiece that lasts more than an hour rather than one featuring nine songs. Each song surely has its own form and style but when everything is combined together, they evolve into this one huge mosaic. Some songs like “Journey to the Centre of Mass” or the last piece “Syntheosis” (also the longest songs in the album) contain the most intense elements in the record whereas the transition songs like “The Universal Eye” or “Infinite Gate Opening” are the perfect songs to breathe, calm down and meditate….and possibly to lose oneself in the space.
With its twists and turns, “Syntheosis” is by far the most interesting record I have listened to this year and definitely in my list of the best of 2019. Get your candles ready, clear your head and dive into record. It will not disappoint you at all. Especially recommended for the lovers of the psychedelic, the occult and the dark/doom metal.
