Fortid – Völuspá part III: Fall of the Ages

Releasedate: 26-03-2010; Label: Schwardorn Production
By: Sabine van Gameren

Fortid is a black metal project that is started by Einar Thorberg. With this project he released already two albums, but now the final album out of the trilogy is released: “Völuspá part III: Fall of the Ages”.

After a calm introduction, the album comes at speed quite fast. Some of the moments, they reminded me strongly to the very first album from Sentenced, mainly for the rhythms. Fortid enjoys playing with different tempo’s, bringing this in extremes, creating by contrasts in the music to keep capturing your attention. Clean vocals get introduced while you not had expected it after hearing the other vocals at first. A nice surprise and yet another element that often brings contrast and diversity. The formation brought this contrast into their sound as a sort of trademark as it seems and this has been done very decently. A little folk influences might be hearable, but don’t expect this to be in any overhand as it is typical Black Metal that stays on a low tempo compared to speedy others, but has darkness and deepness.

Although I have not heard the first two albums of this trilogy I am very impressed by what this band brings and I bet I take them with me if I run into those in a store.
