19-02-2010 Demented Are Go

Supports: Cast No Shadows; Venue: Café Central, Weinheim (Germany)
By: Nina Mende

Tonight we went to Weinheim, Café Central was the place to be for all rockabillies in the neighborhood. Even if you were not a rockabilly it was great to see all these old school styled people. Before the first band entered the stage, the DJ played 40s to 60s music, mixed with some newer music. It was like a reunion of the rockabillies, most of them seemed to know each other and it was as crowded as I don’t get to see it too often here at Café Central.

The bands that were playing tonight were: Cast No Shadows and Demented Are Go. Demented Are Go are a Welsh psychobilly band that was formed around 1982 in Cardiff. They were one of the earliest in the initial wave of bands to mix punk rock with rockabilly, and as a result, are considered to be highly influential to the psychobilly scene. The band often claims their name originated from the phrase “Demon teds are go!,” an adaptation of the phrase “Thunderbirds are go!” from the Thunderbirds TV series, as rockabillies are known as teds and psychobilly is often associated with horror.

Cast No Shadow is a German Punk Rock band, quite young they seemed. But the people were still dancing and clapping along. Still in a warm-up mood though. The band tried rocking the audience, you could tell they were quite nervous. The female fronted band covered some Misfits song, but even then the audience did not go wild. Neither did they as Cast No Shadows covered a Blitzkid song. Cast No Shadows were good though, it was tough warming up for a band like Demented Are Go and these guys did a good job.

Up was Demented Are Go and all the sudden hell broke lose in the audience. Everybody danced and moshed. Dressed up in horror style with Helloween makeup, skin falling off the singer’s face and blood all over they rocked it big time. Everybody sang and jumped along. Even us girls went straight to the mosh pit and just jumped around and along to the tunes. The stand up bass was played heavily, so were drums and guitar and there was no second to take a breath. The sweat was running down on everybody’s faces and bodies. The venue was heated well by now and by the crowd, the fog and smoke made it hard to breath sometimes. But when you’re having a blast all this doesn’t matter. On we went along with Demented Are Go, rocking out. The singer talked little but sang more, kicked our asses to keep on moving. The catchy tunes did not leave anybody standing still. Which was impossible in the venue anyway. Motion was everywhere and getting everybody. Demented Are Go put up an awesome live show. One of the best I’ve ever seen before of these guys. The atmosphere was awesome as well. An awesome show, which left all of us breathless, not only because of the moshing. Demented Are Go even returned for three songs encore. Amazing!
