[schema type=”review” name=”Samael – Hegemony” description=”Label: Napalm Records” author=”Sabine van Gameren” pubdate=”2017-10-13″ ]The world around Samael has been quiet for the past years. But this year they are breaking the silence and come with a brand new release called “Hegemony”. It is available now.
“Lux Mundi” was quite some years ago, but with a new album in our hands perhaps they surprise us again. Yet, the album does not stray too far from your expectations. The band stays with what they have done before. Maybe the most close to the “Passage” album it is. The aggressive touch is there, maybe they did take it up one notch but if you ask whether this is shockingly different: no. Yet, who waited long enough for it may be satisfied. The Swiss guys have layered up thick and created a massive sound, something that drags you into the release. One thing that speaks against this release is that there could have been a bit more variation in the songs. It is a lot of the same and it takes quite a while before you get surprised with some change in the template.
Altogether this “Hegemony” is a nice one for those who awaited it long time. It is a nice album. If it brings something new to your collection: no, the band really did not stray too far and even within the album you will get the feeling you have heard it before. That is a bit disappointing, but furthermore it is nice enough.
