Interview with: Fear of Domination
By: Sabine van Gameren
Finnish Metal formation Fear of Domination is making up for the release of their third full length album. We spoke with the band about this release.
Distorted Delusions
Album number three is ready for its release in the first week of Februari. Fans of the band have been able to follow the progress of the recordings intensively via the youtube video’s that the band posts on their websites, but what the actual result will be is always a mystery until the moment you have an album in your hands. We ask the guys if they can explain us what the fans can expect, those who have known the band from their previous releases and where are the changes in the confidential sound. According to Saku, vocalist of the band, they have grown a lot since the previous release. “There is a more mature sound” he starts telling and continues: “This is the first time we made an album the way we wanted to”.
While talking on about this we get to know that the band has spent a lot of time in the pre-production and that they have got the chance to work the way they choose to, without having external factors disturbing that. “This time we really used a producer” they tell. The band also had the time to experiment a little more and have been making fast decision about whether something would work with their songs or not. “It’s more straightforward” says Saku and everyone agrees to that. Going on about what to expect it comes out that there will be about two songs that are substantially different than people may expect, but yet in line of their sound. “And for the first time we can say there is a fully Finnish lyrics song”, they add.
The recording process have been quite intense for the band. Some have given up their entire holidays for it and also many sleepless night have encountered during the project. “We have spent something like 30 days and also like 10 to 15 nights just recording” they tell and we come to a story on which the recordings went on till early morning. “There was one night when we started to do a very difficult song. We started recording at 10 and the next time I watched the clock was like 5am. We just kept singing and every time I sang something we thought it was so cool, that new things were coming up” Saku says.
Words
About the title of the album the band have been thinking for quite a while. Finding the right words to cover the load and sticks in mind easy is not always that easy to find as it seems. “We were thinking of it for like… three weeks. We were just throwing out names and discussed. We needed to found a title that falls good in the mouth” they said and eventually they came with the name of Distorted Delusions. Without giving away too much of what will be addressed they tell they found the title cover the load best: “In my opinion the album contains a lot of delusions”.
While talking about some of the songs and their topics we come to the point of provocation. As Saku tells, words are always up for a different interpretation but for them there seems always a bit of humour involved in the way it is brought. He comments: “There is some point you just don´t cross. When I write the lyrics I make them the way I hear them in my head. Of course when you write them down there is a little censorship. Different phrase, different kind of words to express the same feeling. Of course we don´t want to get blamed to be a Nazi band. We stay away from that, but we can still joke about power”.
And with these words you can quite summarize it all. However, they do not meant to stick with one central theme and have several topics to address. “Even if the songs are about different things, there is still some of the same kind of emotion“ they explain and that tells exactly what unites them to how we know Fear of Domination. The album will be out at 7 February 2014 and is already available for preorder via: Recordshop X . A video of the song “Legion” is out already as well so a little preview of the album you can see at youtube: http://youtu.be/GyUhi6eAMWw
