Deathchain – 28-03-2013

Interview with: Cult From Hell (Deathchain)
By: Sabine van Gameren

The Finnish formation Deathchain has recently released their latest album. It is the band’s sixth full length release since the foundation in 2001. We spoke with the band about “Ritual Death Metal”.

The band is signed at Svart Records and with the release of their sixth album they seem more than ready to break out the country and spread their music on a wider range. We spoke with the band’s guitarist which goes by the name ‘Cult From Hell’ or short as ‘Cult’.
When we start talking about the album it comes forward that what you can hear on “Ritual Death Metal” is not a completely new sound, but instead an advanced sound of its predecessor “Deathgods”. The way the band has gone there seem to feel good as they decided to go one with the direction they have chosen. How it relates to each other seems to come clear in the fact that the band had the time to put more attention to details ‘Now it is sharpened and polished’ he tells.
The way the band achieved that already started when going to the studio for recording. The recordings were in Necromorbus studio in Stockholm (Sweden) and Deathchain had most things ready before the recordings started. ‘We have never been this prepared before, when entering the studio. It is a direction in which we take things more and more seriously and try to be more professional’, Cult comments. Not everyone was around at the same time, but the guys managed to get it scheduled carefully and leave them with quite some time to add nuances to the sound, some additional vocals whenever they felt it was needed. Realistically, he tells us straight away about the danger that is lurking around the corner when having the luxury like they had this time: ‘In the worst case you start ruining the result if you try to improve something too much’ and concludes with the words ‘It clicked with this album’.

Variety
One of the points that stands out in “Ritual Death Metal” is the variety according to Cult and those who have heard the album will certainly agree. In the song “Our Lady Under The Earth” the band included a classical trained female for some background vocals. But Cunt himself mentions “Tiamat’s Eyes of Death” as it standing out for the use of the melody. He tells: ‘It was controversial. We definitely won’t go more melodic than with this album. It doesn’t sound in a negative way melodic, it is just playful.’
On the other side the album also includes the track “King Pazuzu” which has that evil twist to it. ‘I did not expect it would sound that evil in a good way’, Cult comments. Altogether it counts up to the varied album that “Ritual Death Metal” has become and they seem very ambitious with it. The stages of Europe are seducing the band, and the guys seem ready for it. Yet, there is not something concrete to mention so far. Perhaps when the promotion wheel starts spinning a bit faster the band will get to kick off again. We spoke about video’s as the band’s youtube channel seems untouched for about three years, a new album would be a perfect opportunity to bring it back to life and take advantage of this promotional tool. Cult tells that for the previous album the band had recorded a video but due to circumstances it has never been released. With the new album out the band gave it another shot and recorded a new one just a few weeks ago. ‘It was recorded in a proper studio in Helsinki with a familiar director. It is definitely the best Deathchain music video. Hopefully it will properly promote the album so that it visually represent what we are about’ , he says. The plan is the video will be released close to the album release date, and on the day of publishing it appears the video is released, go see it here.
So it is obvious the band is ready to get the madness started, will it bring them to stages abroad, time will learn. Cult did not leave us without some great advice for all of you though: ‘Do what feels right and what your heart is telling you to do. ‘Listen to Ludwig von Beethoven’s piano sonatas!
