Interview with: Ed Laurie
By: Sabine van Gameren
Ed Laurie has got his album ‘Cathedral’ out and we got asked to spend a couple of minutes on a comfy couch in Paradiso, Amsterdam (Netherlands) to interview this man, here we go.
Many who have the album ‘Cathedral’ in their possession know that there is something about Al which goes as a red thread through this release. The line ‘Still no sign of Al’ is what is behind it. Ed have found that line written on a ‘Cathedral’ once and took it as inspiration after wondering what had happened with him. It is imaginable that many of the people who have read this may start wondering the same so we asked Ed Laurie himself if he eventually heard what happened. This seems not the case as he tells he did not really look after it: “It is one of those things that strikes you at the time but then I forgot about for several years, until it came back”.
The album self is somehow a different experience for him, as the way of working on it seems quite different from how he had worked on material before. He recorded it with three charming Italian fellows that are joining in the conversation as well. The guys have known each other for quite some time, also performing together in a jazz formation and Ed Laurie flew in from London to Italy to record this album there. “Makes more sense for me to go there than have all of them fly to London” he tells and we can only agree to that. Who does not want to enjoy the beauty of Italy after all? |
Even though the album ‘Cathedral’ got released, a video for a song (‘Albert’) of an older release recently got out. It happens to be that it is a typical DIY project of the singer himself. It was something he wanted to do for a long time but never got the opportunity for and when the perfect moment arrived he decided to go for it. “I was very lucky to be working the Mezouga desert” he starts telling. “In between what I was doing I got some friends to shoot me. I knew the timing was relevant to the song. The song is about Albert Camus, he is the writer of the book The Outsider” he continues. He has been waiting for over six years for the right images to come and then eventually when he ended up at the right place he shot the video. Although there are not concrete plans for a next video of which he can speak off right now, he seem to have some clear visions and preference for making a video for the song ‘East Wind’. In our final search of where these guys may surprise us in the future the question comes up what they would do if they could bring something radically different into the genre which comes with quite diverse answers from all of them. From “more passion” to “More space” and “more show, theatre elements” we go but the most surprising answer comes from Ed Laurie: “Silence”. |
