Turmion Kätilöt – 17-12-2011

interview with: Turmion Kätilöt

In 2011 we saw and heard a lot about Turmion Kätilöt. The band had released their album “Perstechnique” and went outside of Finland for the very first time. Time for a quick chat with the guys to see what has been going on.

In March this year, the guys came with the release of “Perstechnique”. The album got considered a bit darker than the party album “U.S.C.H. and the band got quite a step forward with it. “It’s better, fresher than ever before” RunQ, playing keys in the band, comments. Seems like a statement you hear from each musician about their new album, but the band’s drummer DQ is agreeing on this part as while. He has been new in the band, so “Perstechnique was the first release with them. “It is the best album ever. It has really different kind of songs, so it is pretty interesting. Every song is quite different” he adds.
That it was different can be seen what has come out of it, the band crossed the borders and did their first show abroad in Berlin on the Suomi Darkness event during Berlin Music Week. After that the band went on tour supporting Pain through Europe, which according to the guys have been yet another experience. “The whole tour was so different from that gig in Berlin” they tell. Where they were headlining in Berlin the band was now on the road as a support act and the guys are well aware that in these shows many of their audience was there because of Pain. They band’s fame reached further than Finland already due to their reputation they built through the years and the power of the world wide web. “In every show there were also people that specially came to see us” they tell full pride. Yet they guys seem to have been starting the tour quite neutral though “we had no expectations of the tour, it was the first tour we did outside of the country and we didn’t have a clue”, RunQ says.

On different sources people could find a lot of what has been going on. Of course Pain kept a tour diary and the stories came from other sources as well, but what we really wondered about is something that has been going on with the police. It appears to be just a joke so I asked the guys to explain this all to us: “It was on our almost last show. The Pain people they told us that there has been some complaints about nudity or something like that. So they said the police would show up and watch the show to see if there was any nudity in that”. An interesting prank, knowing that in Germany and the rest of Europe the people aren’t making that much of a problem about a little show. “We all fell for it, we thought it was true. When we think about it now it was really stupid that we fell for it, but it was so well organized. Everyone was in it”.

Nice to have that cleared up. We try to figure out what the band is going to do next, but they seem to be not talking about it. From “nobody knows” till “it’s secret” in a few seconds we transfer towards the words that the band has not really started on thinking of a new album yet. “We don’t plan things” they say while telling they don’t want to make promises they can’t make true after all. It helps that the band is on their own label so there is no pressure for them and let it all up to the creative process to decide whenever something new will come up.
The band has a few concerts planned for the new year, but can not tell anything about any planned festivals yet. It is just the time that will tell and so you all just have to wait.
