29-10-2008 I Am Kloot

Venue: Batschkapp, Frankfurt (Germany)
By: Nina Mende

Although I arrived quite late the Batschkapp was still quite empty and all the people who where there already, gathered in the back of the venue. Looking around I mostly saw university students, white collar workers and common babbitts. Outside were not many more people, but they all arrived bit by bit right before the show began and after the first two songs of the only band tonight, the club was crowded.

The band which was playing tonight was called I Am Kloot, a band from Manchester/UK founded in 1999. Three guys on stage making it look abandoned because they don’t use much of it. As a matter of fact was the drum set placed in the middle more towards the front of the stage, the bass player was seated on a little chair and the singer and guitar player was the only one who actually moved a lot with his acoustic guitar. Their music was slow yet very serious and powerful with expression. The fans danced a lot to it, which was odd to watch because the music was not as fast as they moved. The voice and sound was amazing and more gave a late night bar atmosphere than an actual concert. The singer talked a lot with the audience, told sometimes what the song they were about to play is about. The show lasted for more than an hour plus encore. Everybody cheered a lot and sang along to most of the song. There was a fan standing right in front of the stage trying to talk to the singer all the time and commenting on everything that was said or done which pissed the singer off quite a bit. So the singer asked the fan to leave the spot and go stand somewhere else. It took a lot of convincing and talking from the nearest audience to this guy to make him change the spot and not getting the singer irritated anymore. But in the end everything was fine again.

It was a great concert experience with such an audience. I usually don’t listen to the same kind of music to see these kinds of people around in venues. But the show was great and I enjoyed it.
