Glamour of The Kill – 07-04-2011

Interview with: Davey Richmond
By: Sabine van Gameren

Davey of Glamour Of The Kill, had some time to chat up with us, before their concert in Amsterdam.

The band has its album “The Summoning” out and the promo is going hot. Davey seemed still a bit uncomfortable with attention of the press at first, avoiding eye contact as if he is a little shy, but we started chatting about the tour that the band have done which is clearly something Davey enjoys talking about. They have been on a 29 day tour in the UK and straight after that some dates on the continent are scheduled. It is not the first time that the guys played here as Davey refers to Powerfest in Amsterdam and some of the festivals they have done in Europe. A few minutes we drifted off to Sauna Open Air in Tampere, Finland where they played in 2010. The festival also had Kiss on the bill and Michael Monroe, the vocalist of Hanoi Rocks.
As soon as we’re talking more about the tour it comes clear that the band is really excited to be here. “In Europe they threat you a lot nicer. You get a lot nicer food, It’s generally a nicer atmosphere. In the UK people can be cold, nasty a bit harsh” Davey explains. But however the first impressions seemed fine. He keeps his reservations and tells that he may be able to tell more about the big differences at the end of the tour.

Glamour of the killThe tour is all about their debut album “The Summoning” which came out earlier this year. The band had quite some touring done and therefore their fans were familiar with the songs already. Because of all the touring that has been done the band has gotten a lot of attention and Davey admits that this brought some pressure with it. “I was a bit nervous but also kind of excited for the release. It feels like everyone is looking at us” he says but after all it turned out quite well. The band got a lot of positive feedback and Davey tells that it feels amazing. It brings them to all different places and that seems to be one of the things that he is grateful for. Within him is the probably the explorer, the world traveler, and when you can do this during a tour with your band it comes to the win-win situation.
The album was recorded in Newport New Wales with the same guys the band have worked with for the release of their EP. It all was quite fast process as it seems, in a few months the songs were written and quite soon after that recorded. About writing the songs, the band doesn’t have a solid way of working. “Most of the time we have a piece of music that we like and then we kind of write the song, we add melodies and then lyrics. Sometimes it can start with a melody and we write the music around that. It depends what kind of mood we are in, I guess.” Davey explains. However, he makes clear that all the band members have their input on the songs and therefore the way of working may be different each time.
All the songs for The Summoning were ready before taking them into the studio and only some occasional changes were made for the better. This way suits them well and they would definitely keep on working this was according to Davey.
At this album the band have tried to show how they improved compared to their EP. This came with the fact that there is no real theme surrounding all the songs. “There are two songs about death, which is something we write about a lot, but there was not really a theme” Davey tells and he continues saying that there are definitely songs that people can relate to.
We wonder where all of this is coming from and Davey tells that there are many influences that made him who he is, musically. He mentioned bands as Queen and Bob Dylan as those he grew up with at home, but during high school he got introduced to harder bands like Papa Roach and Linkin Park. In the end he seem to like a quite diverse range of music. “If you go through my cd collection you would find a lot of stuff you would not imagine. Like Beatles” he says.

After this we take a short tour to what is coming up for the guys. Davey tells they recorded a video for “If Only She Knew” and this will be released after the band completed their tour. A big British festival is on the list for them as well, but they will announce this later. About a new album, there seem to be no intentions to rush. The band is now taking their time for this album and when time is there they will start writing and recording new material.
