SulfurIS is a metal band in the broadest term from Finland that don’t fit in the limitations of sub-genres of metal in general.
Corpus//Animus is their 1st ever long play effort, and in my opinion as a brand new band who don’t really fit in an exact scene; they have the privilege of being signed by a great label such as Inverse Records. Vincent Lilium supports screaming and clean vocals. Daniel and Samu’s guitars are fast, shredding also quite melodic. They still somehow offer novelty to the listeners overall.
There are 8 tracks on the album, which I think is just the tasteful amount of tracks in this range of intensity. When I read their description of Groove Metal in our promo list, I thought it was going to be a Finnish version of Lamb of God, but Corpus//Animus pleasantly proves me wrong.
In tracks like Parasite and Eye, I detect punk rock elements of Rancid and just one delicious classic metal guitar solo. In general, I wasn’t digging the vocals as much as I’d have liked to. Punk rock riffs also dominate Shatterpoint, which also has a very Finnish melody and feel to it, while on the opening track Reunion (Skol and Hati) you can feel the groove metal to a t, which made me very happy, so it ended up being my favorite of the whole record. I’m glad that SulfurIS blended the mixture of various metal genres in their style, because you’re absolutely in for a rollercoaster ride with this record. It keeps things hyped and rather thrilling for my taste as much as some listeners could find this aspect pretty confounding. It’s okay though as metal is no cup of tea for a conformist control freak anyway…
In the end, I have found Corpus//Animus to be such a fresh breath of air, I am sure it will be interesting to catch them live at some point.
