After a three-year pause from the release of “Manifesto”, German melodic death metal band Deadlock are back with their fifth album, “Bizarro World”.
Deadlock sound is one of those that might conciliate quite a wide audience. Indeed, it’s caught in the middle of two apparent diametrically-opposed sounds: Death Metal and Pop. This characteristic of them is hearable already from the onset: where the opening song gets quite some energy spread thanks to Sebastian Reichl’s growling, it soon balances it with a sharp changeover left to Sabine Weniger’s voice and all of the rhythm change that comes from it. The album finds its way on this path made of constant contrasts between melody and energy that might initially throw the listener off balance, but after a while gets easy to swallow. In this latest release more than anywhere else, the band leaves quite a big visibility to Sabine’s voice that is now used not only for duets but also as the main vocals of “State of Decay”, “Rengade”, probably the pearl of the whole album, and the ballad “Paranoia Extravaganza”. The album reaches its closing with what seems to have become a cliché for Deadlock, a ballad (just “Paranoia Extravaganza”) to smooth the atmosphere.
“Bizarro World” is surely not the case of a masterpiece, but it definitely proves once again how two completely different genres can actually be greatly combined.
