Djevel is a Norwegian Black Metal formation. The band has been active for quite some years and is currently releasing their seventh full length album. It is called “Tanker Som Rir Natten” and it is available now.
The band has been going through quite some line up changes through the years but now we are in a full line up situation again. A new vocalist is to be introduced, Kvitrim is laying his mark on this release. A rather raw edge to the sound of Djevel is what he brings to it.
“Englene Som Falt Ned I Min Seng, Skal Jeg Sette Fri Med Brukne Vinger Og Torneglorier” is the first song on the release, quite a title we would say, but that is something to find throughout Djevel’s discography. It is a haunting start of the album where the band is having some melody to go along with it. What comes to notice while listening to this release is that the band is subtle in their songwriting. Never breaking you in some brutal changes, but always leading up to the moments. Beautifully dark.
The songs are following up nicely, one leads towards at the other and while the lyrics are not too fluently understood by one who is not Norwegian, they give the feeling of being a complete story rather than a collection of loose pieces.
“Naar maanen formørker solen i en dødelig dans, ber jeg moder jord opp til en siste vals” has some acoustic guitar included and with this the way they implement it it slightly sets itself apart. Interesting approach and as always, subtly done.
Altogether Djevel brought us an interesting album. They have a clear vision of what they want to present and are not looking for the area’s outside of this. It results in a solid release that is recommended to try.
