Location: Ankara, TR
Cello-metal giants Apocalyptica was in Turkey after a while and this time they toured 3 big cities of Turkey; Izmir, Istanbul and finally the capital Ankara. I was lucky to attend the last leg of the Turkey tour in Ankara.
The venue; Milyon Performance Hall was packed with fans of both Metallica and Apocalyptica and also a dozen of Finns amongst the audience who were probably diplomatic workers who happened to be in Ankara. The atmosphere was exciting since the band got on the stage half an hour later than the scheduled time. Man, everyone was jammed but luckily thanks to the organization I got to watch the show from the balcony.
There was no opening band, maybe because of which the crowd became a bit restless waiting for the band, there was music in the background but it could not be heard so loudly. Despite it all, I could tell everyone could not wait for the four horsemen of cellos to come on the stage.
The concert was entirely made up of the band’s debut album that is self titled as the event title: “Plays Metallica by Four Cellos” way back from 1996. So it has been over 2 decades since they released their first album.
The set kicked off with Enter Sandman and Master of Puppets, Wherever I May Roam respectively to the joy of the crowd. Oh, of course I should mention the singer of Apocalyptica shows are always the audience! So the Ankara crowd gave it their very best singing the Metallica hits with much ardor. The show lasted for 2 full hours and everyone from the band and the crowd (at least me) was soaked in sweat from headbanging. It was so nice to see the legendary Finns who granted us the chance to unite with their live music once more.
