01-03-2008 Sweet Avalanche

Support: Truth or Dare; venue: De Gooth, Ridderkerk (Netherlands)
By: Sabine van Gameren

This night in de Gooth I went to see two bands. The first band to play was Truth or Dare. By writing this, the band does not seem to have any band site or MySpace and as I found out they were still looking for a drummer by the end of 2007.Their music is best to described as heavy pop rock. Sounds like a mix of styles and that is exactly what you can expect from this band.

On stage the band was quite disappointing. The whole band plays emotionless. Like they are playing songs, someone else wrote for them and they don’t support and they rather not perform. Their female vocalist is the one who shows this attitude most. I can imagine that she was having a hard time to get over the other instruments, her vocals seem to disappear. Only in the last songs she sung from her heart. As far as I heard, she does have a nice voice, so I guess this band has to grow a little more and I would like to see them again in one year, to see how they are progressing.

Sweet Avalanche is a progressive metal band which got their complete line up late in 2007. Also a quite young band. I have to admit that I did not have great expectations from this band while I was checking their MySpace before I decided to go to this gig. I have to give my compliments to the band because they proved me to be better than I have thought. Especially the grunts in their music were better than what you hear in the music on their MySpace. Second surprise were their guitarists they played very well and shown their skills to the audience on an entertaining way. The band had the same problems with the vocals. Hardly hearable at some points. The instruments were quite dominating and I tried to find a spot in the audience where I could hear the vocals better.
When I finally found one, right in front of the vocalist, they were already at the last song. They played a Rolling Stones cover of Paint it Black, which was quite funny, but ended quite abrupt.  Let’s see how this band will do in the future!
