22-02-2008 Das Ich

Support: Xmh; venue: Bibelot, Dordrecht (Netherlands)
By: Elvira Visser

The first band was the Dutch band XmH, I certainly did not like the band. Maybe
just a matter of taste but XmH did not do much to me. Two keyboards on stage
and a singer, who was walking around and around. Which reminded me a more of
a hiphop singer performing in front of an audience than a metal singer, touching
the hands of the crowd and moving all over the stage.

The headliner of tonight was Das Ich, which is one of Germany’s most famous
gothic bands. Das Ich was established in 1989 by Stefan Ackermann (arranges:
vocals, lyrics) and Bruno Kramm (arranges the music). Both of them were on stage
tonight. Das Ich skilfully mix electronic and industrial elements into an explosive
cocktail. Not afraid of using modern music technology and trying out new things.
Symphonic arrangements were combined with themes around German literature and
  philosophy.

It was quite interesting to see this band on stage. They had some sort of spider
legs construction on stage onto witch their keyboards were connected, this was
movable and something different then a regular band on stage. That was not the
only thing that was standing out, their dressing up was remarkable as well.
Stefan and Bruno were dressed in red. Stefan had red body paint all over him
together with red trousers. Bruno had some sort of rope in black and red and
his two red devil horns made out of his hair.

Their music is quite surprising and inventive, that, mixed with Stefans theatrical
poses, it delete “it”makes you want to watch and listen to it. Sadly
for me I did not know the lyrics and did not fully understand what they were
singing about, but I did get the “God ist Krank” part. Which was funny
because they where playing in an old church transformed into a venue. The audience
was quite tame this evening until a point was reached when feet had left the
ground and everyone started dancing. You could see the guys on stage having
a good time as well, although I wondered if Bruno did not become a little caught
up in his devil role, his eyes were twinkling and that grin on his face…but
sure proved they had a great time. After a loud applause and encore they finally
left the stage. I hope that I will see this band again someday, maybe a bit
more prepared so I can enjoy them even more.
