Night By Night – 21-02-2010

Interview with: Iain Frisk
By: Sabine van Gameren

Just only a few days to go before Night By Night will appear on Trashfest festival in Helsinki. Tempelores mailed some questions for them to get into the Trashfest mood.

Trashfest is coming soon, How are you guys look up to that?
How did you got into the Mama Trash Family Artists?
We’re very honoured to work with Mama Trash, she only goes with the bands and music that she likes, and all of the artists are of a very high caliber. Ben met her in Finland, I think, she then checked out our music and invited us to join.

What are your expectations of playing this event in Helsinki?
I actually have some friends from London who go to Trashfest every year, and I heard it’s a great party. There’s going to be some great music, and a bunch of funny stories – there always are when Night By Night go on tour! We’ve played alongside Lord Of The Lost once before in Berlin, so it’ll be good to see them again, and infact the whole lineup looks set to be really good. Me and Jonny (Bassist) are looking forward to wearing two pairs of socks, I’ve been told it’s pretty cold this time of year.

Can you tell us about your release “Can’t Walk Away”, how did it come to the final result as it is now?
We give a lot of attention to our songwriting, so we came up with the initial versions and made changes as we played them live. Then we had a practice run – we recorded everything on my computer and made lots of decisions about how things were gonna be done in the real studio. Those demo’s actually sound really good – if we’d spent some time mastering them, we could have released them. Taking those demo’s to the studio in Wales, knowing exactly what we were gonna do, allowed us to step up to the next level. Working with Romesh (producer) was great – we knew what we were doing, he knew what he was doing – it was perfect.

Are you satisfied with the results?
Absolutely – it’s the best work any of us has recorded so far. If our first album turns out anything like the EP, it’ll be one hell of a debut.

If the next release come sight, can we expect it to stay into what we know from you now, or would you do much changes and experimenting?
It’s too early to be sure, but we recognise the importance of both innovation in music, and the significance of good songs. It’s all about a good balance. Whatever we come up with, we want our first album to be something you can listen to all the way through without getting bored or finding a song you want to skip.

What can we expect from you in the future? First touring? Another release?

Right now we’re working towards our debut album, getting a deal that’s right for us, and getting a great support slot on a tour. But before all that, right now we’re really excited to be going to see and play in Finland for the first time.
