Venue: London Pub, Helsinki (Finland)
By: Sabine van Gameren
When going to Helsinki, I knew I would go to see Danny Lips. I did not know that they were involved in a band contest though. That was what I found out when standing in front of London Pub. Today was a night in the first round. Each night, two bands play and then it is up to the audience to see which band goes to the finals.
First band to play was Hope. The name sounds promising. The band makes some grunge/garage rock. Unfortunately my hope is gone in three songs. Not really a band that which interests me. There is also not that much stage activity. Maybe it has to do with the fact that there is not really a stage in London Pub. They just reserved a free corner somewhere behind the snooker table.
The second band was Danny Lips. Some more easy-to-listen music compared to Hope. Seems like the band attracts a wider audience,
that clearly enjoys the show. Girls dancing to the rock songs from Danny Lips and a way better stage act makes the show more dynamic. Playing “Say Something” from their latest EP which was reviewed by my colleague made me smile.
After the show, it was time to vote. People wrote down the name of the band they wanted to see in the semifinals and handed it in. Then, after a few minutes they announced the winner: Danny Lips.
