Finnish rockers Poets of the Fall – singer Marko, guitarist Olli and keyboardist Captain – started out their musical adventure from scratch in 2003. Marko sold everything he had to invest in pursuing the love of his life, music, with his buddies Olli and Captain. He moved into his folks’ basement, when he couldn’t keep a place of his own any longer. The guys then built a little studio of their own in Captain’s living room for the recording and producing sessions, and kept an office in Olli’s beat up old car. The result of the recording sessions was a novel blend of pop, rock, metal and industrial sounds. “Twilight Theater” is their fourth studio album.
Ten songs in a great mix of slow and fast, all extremely touchy are packed on this “Twilight Theater”. The sound of the songs definitely reminds of theater music. Just like we are used to, all songs go deep underneath your skin and straight to your heart. The lyrics are deep and wide in meaning and expressing power. From the first second on after pressing play on this album you feel like the world is pressed on pause. The second you realize that feeling is also where the song “War” describes just that phenomenon. There is no haste on this album but no endlessly seeming endurance, the music on “Twilight Theater” is simply timeless, outside of time and space, floating somewhere unable to grab but impossible to not feel deep within. Somehow the music lifts everything off you, so not only the music seems outside of everything, but it also projects that onto you. Poets of the Fall must have a secret recipe for music like that, because all their music seems like that. The only difference between the albums is: Even perfection can be made even more perfect. It takes some time to let this album sink into you, your mind and your body to wholly understand it and feel the wide range it actually has. The first listen convinces you of it right away though. But that is probably a strategic step of the band to avoid sayings like “I can’t wait for the next” and “When is the next album coming?” because “Twilight Theater” will keep us all busy for a while. A while in which Poets of the Fall can work on the next masterpiece to bring this album’s perfection to a higher level and work without anybody waiting. I could keep on wallowing in astonishment of this album but then again I am speechless about the brilliance of the arrangements and songs. This is simply amazing. A must have for everybody that loves music. And I really mean it.
