This October, a new supergroup of friends headed by Lee Richards, best known as the original guitarist of Godsmack, offers us an absolutely hearty and welcoming debut album, Songs for a Broken World.
Out of the eleven tracks, “Believe” instantly hits the “favorites” list. Honestly, I listened to the entire album first without checking which tracks were picked as singles. Yet, there’s no doubt that the heavy-hitting, slightly grunge-tinted “Faithless” and “Fallen (Save Me)” stand out as the strongest anchors of the record.
Looking beyond the obvious hits, “Yesterday’s Child” brings a pleasant surprise: its guitars skip the massive, overblown ’70s leverage for something more grounded. True to its title, “Say Your Last Goodbye” promises something heart-tearing yet healing at the same time. And “Summer Breeze” feels like a realistic wind blowing through your hair and clothes that definitely “makes me feel fine”.
After all, it is a tight, clean rock something that leans into a distinct, almost unplugged and acoustic feel. Instead of chasing a massive stadium sound, the band strips away the overproduced walls of distortion, giving the music an honest, raw, yet polished edge. If a warm, solid friendship could be converted into the record, this is exactly what it would sound like, reminding us that the world is growing stronger through its own cracks.
