I discovered Shores of Null three years ago, with their previous and 4th album “The Loss of Beauty”, and I am very glad that I did. My impression of them is still the same today: their music still sounds very Nordic, even if they come from Italy. This new album is doom and gloomy, of course, but at the same time it is very dynamic. There are many melodic riffs and the drumming is more upbeat than I expected for this style.
Everything here reminds me a lot of Swallow the Sun, Amorphis and Insomnium. If you like these bands, I think you will feel at home very fast.
Jumping on the tracks, my absolute fav off the record ended up being Son Of The Tide, and Dreaming Of A Scar. I liked these tracks more with harsh vocals which I find more fitting to the band’s whole sound. Two Mountains made me feel like I was listening to Tomi Joutsen from Amorphis. Very reminiscent indeed. To me the eponymous track which is also the single falls a bit flat within their genre. The Numbing Void has this great doomy vibe also thanks to Natalie Koskinen of Shape of Despair’s haunting back vocals. Though, it kind of trudges slowly for my own liking.
Overall, this is a very fulfulling album for the melodic doom metal fans. Make sure to check out the band live on their European dates this autumn.
