After a renewed rhythm section, the Swedish rock quartet Old Man’s Will returns with their third album, At Last.
The record offers 8 tracks, all wrapped in a dense, fuzzy, and gaze-infused atmosphere. Saluting and respecting legends like Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple, the band shifts their focus heavily towards a gritty 70s rock aesthetic.
The moody opener, “Meet Me At Sundown,” perfectly sets the main lore of the entire release. The true centerpiece, however, is “High Ambitions.” Living up to its name, it takes the listener to the top, not in the obvious up-to-step-ladder way, but through a deeply captivating, psychedelic one. For over seven minutes, the expansive guitar solos frame the vocal parts gently and masterfully.
What grounds this record is the way it maps out its different surfaces. The music easily shifts from the hazy, diffused glow of streetlights and dim city windows in “Lover’s Delight” (“down the street city lights”), to the raw, cleansing pull of nature in “Holy Water” (“take me down to the river”), and after all finds a distinct sense of place.
Instead of chasing instant memorability, the band lets the music stick to you naturally. It opens up a wide, unhurried narrative where you can simply catch the vintage vibe and absorb the record as a whole.
