The Australian hard rock quartet Airbourne started “Running wild” with Lemmy starred as the truck driver in the video. In 2007, the band decided to walk in AC/DC boots to their glory, and keeps on going. It took nearly two decades of sweat, beer, and unyielding riffs to finally drop a self-titled record, proving with the sixth album that rockers haven’t changed lanes.
The current record packs a massive punch across 12 brand-new tracks, delivering exactly what pub-rock devotees have been craving. Decades after declaring “No Guts. No Glory.”, the band returns with a sound that’s arguably more polished, yet still undeniably “Gutsy”. The raw aggression might be dialed back a notch, but the wild spirit is still very much there.
Turns out, Airbourne have grown up enough to contemplate eternity, weaving a powerful thread of legacy. The roaring reminder “Alive After Death (Last Plane Out)” proves true rock icons stay forever. The gritty rebellion continues in “Hells Got No Vacancy”, a fiercely belligerent anthem showing that even the underworld isn’t ready to handle this stubborn rock ‘n’ roll survival. Finally, “Send Me To Rock ‘N’ Roll Heaven” closes the album on a deeply emotional note. It’s a beautifully heavy salute to the giants who left us, coming full circle for a band that started their journey with Lemmy himself behind the wheel.
Interestingly, this rock creature feels slightly less electrified in the traditional AC/DC sense this time around. The result landed in the place where indie storm has washed ashore the gritty remnants of proto-punk, trading the usual wild overdrive for a tighter, more mature garage groove. It’s a solid, bittersweet evolution, but for that origin chaos, you might still want to stick to the Airbourne classics.
