The Spectre Beneath is a UK-based metallers standing with power and progressive lore since 2018. Recharged vocals section, the band returns with the four record in eight-year history titled The Devil’s Whisper.

The current offering includes nine main tracks plus a bonus song. The album opens with “Germ,” a dramatic, highly theatrical track. Female vocals frame the material, delivering a soulful performance rooted in a haunting, mourning style of crooning that sets a dark, compelling tone right from the start. A key highlight of the tracklist is undoubtedly “Conundrum,” a song that leans heavily into the band’s progressive roots, showcases complex structures and rich musicianship. In contrast, “Waiting for Change” serves as a purely instrumental piece, providing listeners with a well-placed moment of respite amidst the heavy sonic landscape. The title track, “The Devil’s Whisper,” shines during its elegant piano passages, while the lengthy “Forgiveness” masterfully channels classic Iron Maiden vibes toward its finale. However, the absolute standout of the album is “Inferno.” Speedy, dynamic, and beautifully harmonized with the vocals, this track feels like a triumphant tribute to a long and difficult creative path.

The Spectre Beneath delivers its best ideas as random musical elements, though the reunion with their past vocalist suffers from a noticeable disconnect between the vocals and the underlying instrumentation.
