Goth’n’roll outfits Hell Boulevard are back with their fifth studio album, Made in Hell. Known for blending dark gothic rock with orchestral flair, the band drops the excessive theatricality this time around to explore a more aggressive sonic landscape.
Starting with “Pitch black,” Hell Boulevard thickens the sound into a heavy industrial groove, setting the course for the next tracks “BTCH PLS” and “The fine art of breaking up.” Unexpectedly this rock creature unlocks a shared proto-punk vibe, acting as a homage to Sex Pistols. The cover art backs up the aesthetic — just a fact, Social Distortion used a similar palette for their latest release. The “bang-bang” drum machine in “Rebels” punches you in the gut so hard you forget how to breathe. The screaming in “Antisocial club” is a straight-up echo of Slipknot’s “Psychosocial.” With “Of fallen idols,” the band unveils a theatrical, dramatic piece that feels more like a performance than a regular track.
Lyrically, the material is quite naive, but the teenage angst is 100% on point, making you shed a tear or two from time to time. Practically every song is built on hypnotic synth loops that spin your head right round and keep the whole record rollin’. Long story short, the sound has a serious edge.
On this philosophical note, I’d pronounce all this stuff fabb-ulous. Skip the boulevard of broken dreams and head directly to Hell Boulevard for never-ending drive. P.S. Additionally, I highly recommend In Black We Trust if you haven’t heard it yet.
