The Czech band Stellvris formed in 2019 and launched the metalcore scene with Upside Down EP in 2022. Year after the rock formation released full-length album, but in two years decided to back with only EP. The recently released Shatter & Bloom is available on streaming platforms.
The content of the record includes four original tracks and cover for Nicki Minaj’s “Starships”. As for me, it’s painfully hard to find the optimal tone of voice for female crooning amongst motley creatures of post-rock genres. My luck, Nicol Hofman fits the best. Her versatile approach combines a passionate and melodic singing with dreadful growling highlights, showcasing an impressive range of vocal techniques.
Back to the record. The listening begins with the song “Shatter & Bloom” that alarms to wake up literally and figuratively. “Silence After Violence” employs minor key tonality and dissonant intervallic jumps to evoke despair and tension. “Monster” characterized by its aggressive blast beats that intensifies the track’s ferocity. The whisper “watch me” at the end of tune doubled creepy effect. The last mention “Starships” possibly created for the band, which makes aggressive connotation of original pretty much louder.
Stellvris undoubtedly has the potential to create something greater, and this modest release seems premature. Nevertheless, it deserves a respect.
