Edensong – Our Road To Dust

Releasedate: 09-05-2025
Label: The Lasers Edge

Edensong, a progressive rock band based in New York City, released “Our Road To Dust” on May 9, 2025 via The Lasers Edge. It is their first full-length album in nine years, following “Years in the Garden of Years” (2016). It is also the first album they have made as a quartet.

From the opening instrumental “Of Ascents” the mood is set with acoustic guitar and quiet tones prepare listeners for a heavier journey. “The Illusion of Permanence” shifts into firmer territory, replete with driving riffs, flute highlights, and shifting rhythms. Edensong display strong musicianship, particularly in how they weave together clean vocals, flute, and orchestral touches without losing the bigger picture.

Tracks such as “These Old Wounds” and “Hall of Statues” are among the most effective. The former balances melodic passages with dynamic shifts; the latter combines emotive vocals, engaging guitar work, and a pronounced sense of momentum. “Wykkr Bäsct” is one of the more ambitious instrumentals, showcasing rhythmic changes, flute and texture. The closing title track “Our Road To Dust” is also a highlight: it opens gently, builds, incorporates violin, mellotron, backing vocals, and ends with a stirring finale that feels like a summation of the album’s themes.

There are some moments that may feel uneven: the “Of Ascents (Reprise)” is brief and can be seen as an interlude rather than a full song; “Book of Complaints” divides opinion because its tone is more anthemic and less heavy than parts of the album. But these parts may also contribute to the variety.

“Our Road To Dust” is a strong return from Edensong. It showcases their identity while pushing into heavier, more dynamic and focused territory. It may not reinvent progressive rock, but it shows maturity, scope, and well-crafted songwriting. For listeners who appreciate prog with folk, orchestration, instrumental variety, and emotional depth.
