Roxxcalibur, a German tribute/overt NWOBHM-revival band, returns with the album “NWOBHM From The Vaults”, released on May 9, 2025 through Limb Music. Their mission on this, their fourth full-length, is to dig up obscure tracks from the New Wave of British Heavy Metal era and re-interpret them with respect and some personal flair.
The album opens with “Doctor What?”, a short intro, setting the tone—nostalgic and ritualistic. Then it moves quickly into “Demon Preacher” and “Fight For Your Freedom”, which demonstrate Roxxcalibur’s ability to preserve the raw edges of NWOBHM, especially in vocal delivery and guitar tone, while also keeping things listenable with clarity in the mix.
“Wheels” stands out as a fast-paced highlight, with its strong hookline and slightly more complex guitar riffing (one of which guitarist Kalli Coldsmith reportedly had to piece together by ear and experiment to recreate.
“Only Heaven Knows” offers a contrast, more melodic, showing that Roxxcalibur can handle subtler dynamics, not just full throttle. “Cecil B. Devine” is another noteworthy one, their version brings it out into the light well.
Throughout the album, the band shows strong fidelity to the original style: gritty guitar tones, raw but not lo-fi vocals, and rhythms that respect the original groove and pacing of NWOBHM while being clean enough to avoid sounding muddied. The sequencing gives room for energy variation: faster numbers are interspersed with more mid-tempo tracks, keeping momentum without fatigue.
“NWOBHM From The Vaults” is not groundbreaking in terms of original songwriting, since it is entirely a covers collection, but it achieves its goal well: resurrecting under-noticed gems from the NWOBHM era and presenting them with care, respect, and decent musicianship. For fans of the style and those curious about deeper cuts beyond the standard canon, the album offers interesting discoveries. It neither tries to modernize aggressively nor gloss over rough edges, which will likely appeal to listeners who prefer authenticity over polish. It’s a solid tribute project, both historically minded and musically competent.
