Intro

Coming from Dalarna, Sweden, four-piece metal band Signeri have stepped onto the stage. Their music promises to be both enchanting and brutal, both mystical and terrifying. Indeed, some have compared their sound to the likes of Tribulation, Voivod, and Satyricon, all known for being at least dark, if not occult-adjacent. The band themselves have little to say regarding their music, and prefer to let it speak for itself. They are, however, quite pleased to finally let loose their debut album, the self-titled Signeri.

The Album

The album blasts open with Darkness Embrace, and the comparison to Tribulation is immediately evident. Loud and aggressive, but still melodic, this track is built upon banging drums and peppered with gravelly vocals. However brief, this makes for an excellent opening track. Next is Legion Strong, a track filled with rolling guitars and continuous cymbal crashes. The vocals here are almost taunting when not on the verge of becoming screams, which they are often wont to do. After this is Setting Fire to Worthless, a slower track that has vocals dipping between the now typical growl and a more subdued spoken-word style. The backing vocals play a nice part here, attempting to calm the main vocals to varying effect. Halfway through is Häxa, both slower and louder than other tracks, and giving off an air of folksiness through its guitars. There is less emphasis on the vocals here, letting the guitars and drums have time to play, though the track itself feels short.

Shedding Skin starts with a somewhat hollow, melancholy guitar that is soon joined and accentuated by another, the vocals not far behind. While a certain riff plays on and off to hold it together, the rest of the track is somewhat discordant, the quiet moments a definite highlight. After this is Nightfire, a track that takes on a darker edge than previous ones, the guitars almost sounding threatening. There are a pair of riffs that play against each other throughout and it makes for a terrific sound, aided by the sharp pounding of drums. Next is The Sulphur Brigade of the Morning Star, a track that is mildly discordant and seems to enjoy being so. The guitars are constantly changing it up, even taking a break midway to fill the otherwise silence with pleasant meandering. The final track on the album, Hills Painted Red, starts gently with a single guitar, but soon opens itself, guitars and drums completing each other. The vocals here sound slightly ragged, adding to the not-quite sad atmosphere before dropping, letting the instruments fade to the end.

A Final Word

As promised, Signeri make music that is dark, heavy, ominous, and sinister. Their sound is both uniquely their own, while taking bits from other well-known bands as a humble nod. Each track, while similar together, retains its own identity, specifically through the use of intriguing, often haunting riffs. Despite a few bumps along the way, Signeri have created an album worthy of praise. With this under their belts, a second offering will surely pave the way to notoriety.
