Gaupa – Fyr

Gaupa – Fyr

Releasedate: 04-07-2025
Label: Magnetic Eye Records

Swedish rock band Gaupa is back with a mini-album, and their fourth, called "Fyr". This album is quite a turning point for the band due to changes in the line-up as well as changes in the writing process. Gaupa also worked in new studios, with a new recording crew, and new visual artists for "Fyr".

“Fyr” has been inspired by Ursula K. Le Guin’s science fiction novel “The Word for World Is Forest”, and contemplates the concept of time as well as the essential question as to what is real, which seeps throughout the songs.

“Fyr” has the perfect mix of psychedelia and progressive/doom metal, captivating you from the start. Four songs are quite different from each other, showing different characteristics and parts of Gaupa’s sound. Deep down, you might even feel the ritualistic, spiritual and magical atmosphere to “Fyr”. No surprise why the band describes the album as “patchwork of parts” as we see a bit of each bandmember and their footprint. Personally, bands like Amorphis or Kingston Wall also came to my mind while listening to “Fyr”, which put a smile to my face.

One highlight that shines is definitely Emma Näslund‘s vocals, driving “Fyr” and forming the great harmony with other instruments and melodies. Her vocals might remind you of Björk at times, enchanting and powerful. Another nice extra for the fans of physical releases will be the bonus song “Soemnen Febersvan”, which is not included in the digital version. The song is recorded live at Monkey Moon Studios and will be a nice collection if you want to get your hands on the physical copy of “Fyr”.

“Fyr” is definitely a must-have if you are a fan of this genre in general. It is definitely a nice turning point for Gaupa and I cannot wait to see what they have in the future for us.
